LED Pixel Pitch Explained


Introduction

LED pixel pitch is the center-to-center distance between neighboring pixels, measured in millimeters. A smaller pitch places more pixels in the same area and supports closer viewing. It also increases component density and usually increases cost.

How pixel pitch changes image detail

A P2.5 screen has pixels spaced 2.5 mm apart. A P10 screen uses 10 mm spacing. At the same physical size, P2.5 has four times as many pixels across each dimension and sixteen times as many pixels overall compared with P10.

That higher density is valuable when viewers are close or when the content contains small text. It adds little benefit when a billboard is viewed from a long distance.

Pixel pitch and resolution

Screen resolution is calculated from the physical dimensions divided by pixel pitch. A 5,000 mm wide P2.5 screen has about 2,000 pixels across. A 5,000 mm wide P10 screen has about 500 pixels across.

Always calculate the final width and height in pixels before preparing content. The LED controller maps the video canvas to this physical resolution.

Choosing by viewing distance

There is no universal formula that replaces a site review. As a practical comparison, a smaller pitch supports a shorter comfortable viewing distance. Content type, eyesight, brightness and acceptable image texture also affect the result.

If customers will stand close to an indoor retail screen, test a fine-pitch sample at that distance. If drivers view an outdoor billboard from across a road, a larger pitch may provide a better cost balance.

P2.5 vs P10 LED

P2.5 is commonly used for indoor auditoriums, meeting spaces and closer-view commercial walls. P10 is widely used for large outdoor advertising screens viewed from farther away. They differ in more than pitch: brightness, weather protection, cabinet design and power configuration also reflect their intended environments.

A P2.5 outdoor product and a P10 indoor product can exist, but pitch alone does not define indoor or outdoor suitability.

To choose the right pixel pitch for an LED display, provide the screen width and height, nearest and typical viewing distances, indoor or outdoor use, content type and target budget. Ask for the resulting resolution and a cabinet layout drawing for each option.

A good proposal may compare two pitches. This lets you see the change in price, resolution and viewing performance before deciding.
