A successful large outdoor LED screen begins with the site, audience and business goal. Screen dimensions alone do not determine visibility, image quality or return on investment.
Define the advertising objective
Decide whether the screen will display brand videos, retail promotions, traffic-facing advertisements, public information or live content. Content type affects aspect ratio, resolution, controller selection and viewing distance.
Also identify who will see the screen and for how long. Drivers need large text and simple visuals. Pedestrians at a shopping centre can view more detailed content from closer range.
Measure the site and viewing angles
Record the available width, height, elevation and distance from the primary audience. Check whether trees, buildings, poles or signs block the view. The best screen position is not always the largest available wall; it is the position with clear sight lines and appropriate viewing time.
Site photos, drawings and a short video help the manufacturer understand access, orientation and surrounding light. Confirm local planning, structural and brightness restrictions before finalizing the design.
Select pixel pitch based on real viewing distance
Use the nearest important viewer position as a key reference. A smaller pitch supports closer viewing and finer detail, while a larger pitch can be effective for distant traffic and large-format graphics.
Do not choose pixel pitch from screen size alone. Text height, content design, viewing time and budget also matter. Ask the supplier to calculate the final resolution and demonstrate how typical advertisements will appear.
Plan for sunlight and night viewing
Screen orientation has a major effect on brightness needs. A south- or west-facing screen may experience intense direct sunlight, depending on location. Shaded façades may need less brightness.
Specify automatic brightness adjustment or scheduled profiles. The screen should remain clear during the day without becoming uncomfortable at night. Local regulations may limit nighttime luminance or operating hours.
Design the structure and electrical system
Large outdoor displays create wind loads and require a professionally engineered support structure. The design must consider cabinet weight, maintenance access, local wind conditions and the existing building or foundation.
Power distribution should include suitable protection, grounding and lightning measures. Confirm input voltage, phase arrangement and cable distances. Structural and electrical work should comply with local codes and be completed by qualified contractors.
Choose front or rear maintenance
A front-service screen allows modules and key components to be accessed from the display face, which is useful on solid walls or narrow locations. A rear-service screen requires a safe corridor or working space behind the cabinets.
Maintenance planning should be completed before fabrication. Ask how technicians will reach every cabinet, replace a module and handle emergency service without blocking traffic or damaging the display.
Plan the control and content workflow
Decide whether content will be updated by local computer, cloud platform or networked media player. Confirm scheduling, user permissions, monitoring and emergency message requirements. For very high-resolution screens, controller capacity and signal distribution need careful calculation.
Cybersecurity and network ownership should also be agreed. Separate the display control network where required and change default passwords during commissioning.
